Can I use Mucinex DM for cough after Tummy Tuck?

Question

I am 8 days post op ( Tummy Tuck) I have mucus in my throat and I feel that I need to cough. Actually I coughed last night and I had so much pain. I am drinking plenty of water and taking Claratin for seasonal allergy. Is it ok to take Mucinex DM. Thanks

Mucinex should be safe to take after your TT.  However, I would not take this in conjunction with any pain medication you have been prescribed, as it may cause problems.  Please discuss this with your surgeon or his office who can best advise you as they know the medications you are on.

Taking medications after surgery should be handled by your own surgeon. I see no problem with Mucinex but you should call the office to make certain your surgeon has no objection to it.

It should be fine to take mucinex. After a tummy tuck it is important to take deep breaths and to cough to help expand the lower portions of your lungs. Sometimes holding a pillow against your abdomen will help with the pain. Best of luck

You should check with your surgeon regarding the medication.  He/she will most like say it is ok.  Make sure you are getting up and moving around and 3-4 times a day are making yourself take deep breaths to help keep your lungs expanded and clear.  If you need to cough, try and hold a pillow very firmly against your abdomen.  You will be able to splint the muscles and reduce some of the discomfort.
