My main concern with my chin is the asymmetry. First photo is how my chin looks normally and the second one is a "photoshopped" version of how I would ideally like my chin. How can this be achieved? I just got my braces off, and my bite is 100% aligned. I am not too concerned with my weak chin but my orthodontist also brought that to my attention. Any opinions appreciated.
Answer: Chin fillers? Implant? Sliding genioplasty? Which would work for me? Hello NorwayGirl444,Thanks for your question. The pictures are helpful. From anterior view, you can see the asymmetry in width of your chin. This can be managed with asymmetric filler injection. If your bite is normal, a chin implant is a great option for both increasing the volume of the chin and, if trimmed asymmetrically, can be used to fill in the asymmetry you see.On lateral view, you can see that your chin does not harmonize with the rest of your face. The only reason to use a chin implant is to remedy this particular issue. While fillers are often touted as being able to augment a chin, the before and after pictures that I've seen tend to be underwhelming. That is why I prefer implants for this.I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please come see us at my office in Cherry Creek.Good luck,Dr. Shah

Answer: Chin implant candidate The photographs demonstrate a weak and recessive chin profile along with mild asymmetry. Placement of a chin implant can help with augmenting the mandible forward, although it will not affect the dentition of the teeth. Chin implants are manufactured in a variety of sizes and shapes, and can be custom carved when needed to address asymmetry. Chin implants are usually placed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. For more information, diagrams and many examples, please see the link and the video below

Answer: Chin contour You appear to have a lower jaw underdevelopment; and the orthodontist has focused only on the dental alignment. The 'chin' is small and narrow; and the lower lip is being 'pushed' forward a bit by the front teeth. A sliding genioplasty as well as strip implants along the side of the chin and under the labiomental fold; would achieve the result you prefer; and yield predictable chin projection. An implant is not the answer since it accentuates the 'isolation' of your specific chin form.

Answer: Options for chin augmentation All the options that you mention are viable. Fillers are easy and quick, but need to be repeated once or twice a year. The sliding genioplasty is a good option, but is more limited in terms of the amount of advancement that can be obtained and the possibility of a step deformity along the jaw line. Chin implants come in various sizes and shapes and can be customized as well. Discuss this with your surgeon and see what option you are more comfortable with. Good luck.
