Septoplasty ulcer, time and healing recommended, still do not understand outcomes and or normalcy of this?

Underwent a septoplasty on 12/7/17. Surgeon did not have to remove cartilage but was able to reshape and stitch with dissolvable stitches. States one side is healing nicely, the other has an ulcer on the septum. His explanation was not clear but recommended continued flushing and monitoring. I’d imagine this can occur, does the potentiate a perforaration? Is the healing process and flushes all I can do? Took z-pack as prescribed with two days of stent before removal.

It is not rare to see an ulcer after septoplasty. The key to preventing a nasal septal perforation is to avoid putting a finger in the nose. Continue to keep the area moist with saline spray and using Ayr gel over the counter. Also check with your doctor if you need Mupirocin ointment as that can stop any bacterial growth. It might be a good idea to take a swab (culture) from the ulcer area to rule out an infection. Above all be gentle with the nose.RegardsDr. Janjua

Thanks for the question. A septal ulcer is not uncommon after septoplasty. Avoid blowing your nose hard. Avoid manual digitation. Use regular nasal douching. It should heal in 2 weeks. I hope this helps.
