I'm 29yrs old and have had two kids over the last two years. I've NEVER been a "healthy" BMI my entire life, and I've always been active, including seeing a trainer 3x a week. I'm 5'6 and weigh 220lbs. Other than having a BMI thats considered obese, I have no other health concerns. my most recent pregnancy i did have preeclampsia, however ive changed my lifestyle majorly and have maintained that for over a year. will a surgeon take me?
Answer: Mommy Makeover BMI Thanks for your question. There is a Body Mass Index (BMI) requirement that patients must meet for the mommy makeover surgery. At my practice, the mommy makeover max BMI is 33. This is based on your height and weight. Based on the height and weight you provided, you are at 35.5 and do not meet our BMI requirement, which means you do not qualify for surgery at this time. Since you are over the BMI limit, I would recommend consulting with your primary care physician on a proper diet for you to bring down your BMI in order to be able to undergo the procedure. Please always consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. Take Care, Moises Salama MD, board certified plastic surgeon

Answer: Plus-Size Mommy Makeover Thank you for your question regarding a plus-size makeover for someone with a high BMI. BMI's are important but not a single number that can exclude you for surgery. What's more important is your medical health. It's important that you have a thorough preoperative physical to include multiple labs, EKG, chest x-ray, and perhaps tests. If you are deemed healthy, it is still possible to undergo surgery, specifically a mommy makeover with a high BMI. Please consult a board-certified plastic surgeon who's experienced in patients with high BMI's. If you have any more questions regarding a mommy makeover, tummy tuck, lower body lift, 360 circumferential lower body lift, belt lipectomy, belt abdominoplasty, or belt dermolipectomy please contact my office. Since a mommy makeover is a big procedure, please seek an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon with significant experience performing the lower body lift. Do your research. Make sure they have performed at least 100 mommy makeover surgeries and have the before and after pictures to prove it. Carefully examine their before and after pictures and check their reviews on RealSelf. If you cannot find an experienced, tummy tuck or lower body lift surgeon in your neighborhood, consider traveling out of state if you must. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen. (“Verified” Plastic Surgeon, President of the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Fellow of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American College of Surgery, and International College of Surgery and member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and RealSelf Hall of Fame.)

Answer: "Plus size" mommy makeover - am I candidate for the procedure? My cutoff for this surgery is BMI of 30. Patients at higher BMI's have much higher complication rates. High complication rates are not appropriate for patients.

Answer: BMI too high At 5'6 and 220 lbs, your BMI is 35 which puts you in the obese category, as you already know. I recommend you begin with something safe such as liposuction. 10 lbs can safely be removed during 1 session of liposuction and the sessions can be repeated if needed. I also recommend you begin a low fat diet, core exercises such as sit-ups, planks, pilates and start wearing a compression garment. Once you get down to a BMI of 32 which would correspond to a weight of 200 lbs then you can consider abdominoplasty with mesh reinforcement, if you are not planning future pregnancies. The mesh creates a more hourglass figure by compressing the abdominal wall resulting in early satiety and helps maintain a reduced weight. Best Wishes, Gary Horndeski, M.D.

Answer: BMI For elective plastic surgery it is recommended that a patient have a BMI of 30 or under. Those above this threshold have a higher risk of complications such as poor wound healing, seroma, and infection. The lower BMI also allows your surgeon to optimize your results. Though there are other health factors considered in addition to BMI in determining if someone is a candidate for a Mommy Makeover, weight loss would improve your chances of candidacy, lower your risks, and improve your results.
