There is no limit on the number of IPL treatments that you can have. We call these treatments "photofacials." Usually we space them out about once a month. Studies have shown that patients who do regular photofacials will delay the signs of skin aging and will maintain more youthful skin. Sometimes it is necessary to delay photofacials in the summer if a patient has a tan. We don't use IPL on tanned skin. Overall photofacials are one of our most popular and successful treatments with little downtime.
Crusting and small blistering is normal. A deeper injury would be less likely and would be treated after a physical exam.
The best treatment is oral valtrex and topical zovirax ointment with a topical steroid. they will take 7-10 days to go away completely. I wish you the best, Dr. Emer.
Actually topicals like retinoids and such are great when used properly in conjunction with IPL because they can help your cells turnover at a much better and faster rate. I tell my patients not to use these topicals the day of treatment, and perhaps the day after IPL if they feel at all...
