Can I still get a custom chin implant if I've had a fat transfer?

Question

I'm planning on having fat grafting to my cheeks, under eyes, and lips. I was considering also having fat transferred to my chin. However, I'm unsure if having this done would preclude me getting a custom chin/jawline implant in the future. I'm not positive I want the implant (it's very expensive), but would like it to remain an option. Still, fat transfer to my chin may resolve my dissatisfaction with my chin/jawline. What do you recommend I do?

It is very difficult to comment on your question without series of photos or in person evaluation. It has been our experience in the past 25 years that fat grafting for mild chin augmentation/shaping is good and reliable technique; you should wait at least one year to see mature result and proceed with implant augmentation if you are not happy with result. Thank you for your question. It is possible to have a chin implant placed after the fat transfer results have settled. The chin implant will provide more projection as well as definition to your chin and jaw. Not all of the fat from the fat transfer will survive, and the final result will take some time to appear, whereas the chin implant will provide a more precise and direct result. Nonetheless, I would recommend you to complete multiple in office consultations with board certified facial plastic surgeons to discuss your aesthetic goals. I would recommend proceeding with the fat grafting of the chin. This will not preclude you getting a chin implant in the future. In addition, it will give you an idea of the potential cosmetic results. Remember, the fat can resorb anywhere from 30 to 70%. Lastly, in most cases, a custom chin implant is not necessary. I prefer custom implants in the mandible angle region but find that there are many standard chin implants that can be customized during surgery and eliminate a significant amount of the costs.

Fat injections are done into the soft tissues while a custom chin implant is placed at the bone level. Thus having a prior fat injection does not preclude having a custom chin implant later.
