Thanks for your question. It all depends on the depth of the lines and how close they are to the lip itself. Sometimes, when the lines are very close to the lip, injecting the superior border of the lip itself helps to smooth out those lines. If the lines extend higher up, then usually it is recommended that the lines themselves be injected (either in parallel or perpendicular, different ways to do this). In addition if you are a "purser" and make certain expressions that are causing these lines to be dramatic, then you might also benefit from a few drops of Botox into the upper lip. This has the effect of relaxing the muscles under the lip that are producing these lines to begin with. If you smoke, consider quitting. Finally, not everyone is a good candidate for filling the vertical lip lines. If the upper lip projects more than the lower lip on sideview or if you have a long philtrum (distance from the nose to the lip), then filler sometimes makes the lines better, but the whole area worse. In this case, filler is avoided, and other options would be Fraxel laser resurfacing, microneedling, microneedling with radiofrequency (eg, Intensif) or even a TCA chemical peel. There are many great options you see, but it depends on your anatomy. Be well.
