Fluid under eye after lower blepharoplasty (Photo)

Question

I had lower transconjuctival blepharoplasty with fat removal and repositioning 9 days ago. I am extremely happy with my progress. However, my right eye (the eye that had more fat) is holding onto fluid, especially in the morning. When I press on the fluid it does move up. I just want to know if this fluod/swelling will dissipate, and if my eye will look like my left eye eventually. It looks really weid when I smile. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks for the question.  You have malar edema, which occurs occasionally, especially when you have a crease from the eyelid corner across the cheek.  Although it takes time to resolve, it will.  Limit your salt intake and sleep with your head elevated!

You have a little more bruising underneath the eye with the crease and swelling and that is causing more inflammation and swelling but well within the range of normal after nine days. This should settle down with time.

Hi Stone80,Congratulations on your procedure!You appear to have normal swelling after your procedure.  This should get better over time.  Discuss your issue with your surgeon, but you could consider massage, cold compress, and low salt diet.Best wishes,Dr. Jay

The swelling you have will most likely resolve. It can take longer for one side than the other sometimes-particularly if the surgeon had to do more work on one side.If you make the skin too tight initially the lid can get pulled down long term with the white of the eye showing underneath.Best of luck to you and be sure to show your pictures to your surgeon at your next visit.
