Can a crown be placed on a central incisor that broke off at the gum line?

My dentist performed a root canal and inserted a metal screw and then put a temporary tooth on. In less than two weeks the tooth fell off because the metal post broke off where it exits the tooth. I did not bite ot chew with my front teeth. How or can he get the screw out.? Would a dental implant be a better option?
