Constant runny nose and congestion

Question

Hello. I had a rhinoplasty a little over a year ago. My nose constantly drips snot when it's cold, when I'm eating, when I'm exercising, when I'm laughing, etc. The only time it doesn't drip is when I'm laying down. When I lay down, my nose also becomes congested. Lastly, I have thick scar tissue growing inside the top of both of my nostrils. Will I have to get another revision to solve these problems? Can the scar tissue that's inside the top of my nostrils (where the scar is) be removed?

I would see your original surgeon to discuss this issue. The nasal drip may be due to allergies as this is the most common etiology of a nasal drip. The scar tissue can be injected with steroids or 5-fluorouracil. This may also need excision or a more drastic procedure if there is scar contracture. I would find a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. I always tell prospective patients to look at the plastic surgeon's training (ideally a 6 year integrated plastic surgery residency and a 1 year aesthetic fellowship accredited by The Aesthetic Society). In addition, examine before/after photos on social media platforms. I would also look at Google or RealSelf reviews. This will help you get a comprehensive understanding of your provider.

Turbinates are organs in the nose that filter in humidify the air. Sometimes they can cause excessive mucus and sometimes they can enlarge and cause nasal obstruction. If you have not had an adequate improvement with either a topical nasal steroid spray or a topical antihistamine spray, both of which are over the counter, please consider reconsulting with your surgeon or with an otolaryngologist.

That sometimes occurs and there is a nasal spray called atrovent  that works very well for the dripping. Nasal gavage might also help.

Changing the shape of your nose can change how secretions from your nose, dissipate and drain.
They’re probably isn’t much that can be done from a surgical perspective regarding the nasal drip.
A rim of scar tissue often forms at the incision point.
Sometimes scar revisions are indicated and sometimes they don’t make things better.
Many patients will simply form the same scar, and the more surgery you do the more scar tissue you get.
I suggest you follow up with your provider and discuss your concerns with him or her.
