Dark spots normal after spider vein treatment on face? (Photos)

Question

I received laser treatment to treat facial Spider veins yesterday. The nurse said these marks were trapped blood, and to help I should massage these areas when applying my moisturizer. Bur I've had Spider Vein treatments before, and never had this side effect, and am a bit nervous. Is it normal? What can I do to help them go away?

It’s important to distinguish between varicose veins and spider veins when choosing between laser therapy, sclerotherapy, and vein surgery. With two board certified vein specialists, our center uses a combination of visual examination, functional flow measurements, ultrasound, transillumination, and infrared light to map out vein networks prior to therapy. Lasers can be used to treat deep varicose vein insufficiency, vein perforators, and varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is ideal for spider veins and reticular veins. Whereas surgery is reserved for severely incompetent varicose vein segments.

It is not uncommon to see dark spots after spider vein treatment.  The spots in your photo look like purpura.  They should go away within about a week, but might take a bit longer.  I recommend that you be careful with sun exposure during the healing process.  If you are out in the sun, use a good quality zinc oxide based sun block.

Thank you for the question! Discoloration is not uncommon after vein treatments such as sclerotherapy. In fact, it shows that the treatment has worked. Typically dark spots occur when some old blood gets trapped inside the treated vein. Fortunately, such discoloration will resolve on its own in a few (3 to 6) months. An in-person exam with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to assess your needs and obtain expert medical advice. Best of luck!

I recommend some topicals (Dark Scar Protector) immediately to prevent hyperpigmentation along with a great sunblock (Spectrase) for broad UV protection. Look at the link below for more information.
