I am having BR surgery this Friday and I have taken 8 weeks off work. I am a cardiac sonographer in a hospital which can be a physically demanding job. I am often standing or must hold a certain position for long periods, and must be able to lift and roll patients during the day. In addition, I sometimes have to move furniture and patient beds. I also have to be able to perform CPR if there is an emergency. Is 8 weeks an appropriate amount of time in my circumstance or too much? Thanks!

Answer: Time off work for a breast reduction Most patients need at least 2 weeks off for a breast reduction. Nurses at the hospital I work at are given 2 weeks by their employer, the hospital, and they do well. They have to limit lifting and try to ask for extra help if needed until they feel strong again, which is typically 4 weeks. For more physical jobs, like police work, I do ask patients to hold off for at least a month, maybe 6 weeks. Best of luck.

Answer: Time off from work for a breast reduction? Congratulations on your decision to proceed with breast reduction surgery; it is one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform. I would run this question by your plastic surgeon, who may have very specific thoughts/recommendations for you. Generally speaking, for my patients who are in your line of work, I recommend 4-6 weeks off of your usual work, but return to modified activity usually within two weeks. Best wishes for an outcome that you will be very pleased with.
