How to Clean Nostrils After Rhinoplasty?

It is common to have dried blood in the nostrils following rhinoplasty. In most cases there are incisions placed just inside the nose for rhinoplasty and sutures to close these. Blood can tend to dry in this area. You can use a solution mixed half and half of saline and hydrogen peroxide on a cotton tip applicator (Q-tip) to moisten and dissolve these scabs. It is better to keep the nostrils clean. The skin incisions heal very quickly after rhinoplasty but you should be gentle when cleaning. You will feel more comfortable. If you have any questions, you should contact your surgeon.

In general, you should avoid sticking anything inside your nose immediately after rhinoplasty.  The use of nasal saline can help break up the scabs and allow your nose to open up.  I generally prefer not to remove any dried blood in the nose (if present) until day 7 due to the risk of bleeding.  

I do not recommend putting anything inside of the nostrils until the tape is removed.  I do let patients clean the outside of the nostrils with saline.  Extra care must be taken if your nostrils were narrowed.  I would always get specific information from your surgeon.

Best to ask your doctor what he prefers. I usually allow patients clean their nose gently after showering with a q-tip, after the splint is removed. SOme recommend saline nasal spray. I do not allow patients to blow their nose for at least 3 weeks.
