Is swelling normal post sclerotherapy?

It's been 24 hours post sclerotherapy. I'm wearing my compression tights as prescribed for at least another 48 hours, but when I pull them down to use the restroom, I notice (among the anticipated bruising) a couple inch in diameter spots that seem swollen and tender to the touch. Is this normal? If so, when should I expect it to dissipate?

Some minor swelling over the treated veins is normal post sclerotherapy but if you have significant swelling in the ankles, please see your physician as this may indicate an excessive reaction or underlining blood clot. Properly measured graduated compression stockings should help.

Thank you for your question.Follow the instructions given by the vein specialist after sclerotherapy.More than usual pain or undue swelling require earlier evaluation and sometimes scanning to rule out the very small likelihood of developing deep vein clots. The symptoms that you describe are normal post sclerotherapy and swelling is also common.  This is usually due to irritation from the injected solution.  Continued compression should help.  If no improvement by one week then follow up with your treating physician.
