And if so, would you think that I'll have to get new impressions with my veneers? I've already had my teeth impressions done, and I was wondering whether or not I'll have to do it again once I have veneers.
Answer: Veneers, Porcelain Veneers, Tooth Contouring, Resin Veneers, Revision, Dentist, Retainer Thank you for your question. Yes, you will have to do impressions again, the shape of the teeth will have changed, and a new impression will be necessary. I recommend a clear plastic vacuform type of retainer, as opposed to the metal wire, and plastic type, as they might scratch or mar the porcelain of your veneers. We do this routinely with veneers, it only takes a couple of hours in the office, and this retainer can also be used for teeth whitening gel, or flouride gels. One last note, if you need to wear a night guard for clenching and grinding, this can also serve as a retainer. An in-person exam is the best way to go. Good luck! Answer: Can I wear a retainer if I have veneers. Absolutely! Definitely have the impressions after the veneers are placed. I would recommend wearing Essix clear plastic retainers with porcelain veneers. Most dentists make an occlusal nightguard after placing veneers. This is much like a retainer on steroids. In addition to holding your teeth in place, the nightguard will protect the veneers for teeth grinding. Some patients also prefer having a fixed lingual wire on the back of their teeth instead of having a removable retainer. Talk to your dentist to see which option is best for you.

Answer: Retainers are OK over Veneers Yes, there is no problem to have retainers over your veneers. Some retainers now are clear and thin (like Invisalign), so those are no issue at all. Some of the "traditional" ones with a wire across the front always have some of that wire going over a space in your teeth to connect it to the part on the roof of your mouth. For some peoples bite alignment, you can wind up biting on those wires and I don't want that for my veneer patients. The other device we make is a combination retainer (without wires) and a clench-resistant guard. For most people this si the biggest risk over time-- clenching on your new bite or veneers. Those bad forces can move your teeth or chip porcelain.

Answer: Retainers over Veneers Yes you will absolutely want to have new impressions after your veneers are placed for new retainers. The retainers need to fit accurately over your new teeth to keep them in place. A quick, simple easy impression is all that is needed to make new retainers.
