I want to get an underboob tattoo before I get boobs. 36A now. How would getting boob job after tattoo affect it?

I recently had abdominal surgery so I have a vertical abdominal scar from the bra line all the way to under my bellybutton. So I want an underboob tattoo to cover some of that up. How would the underboob tattoo look if I got it done before a boob job? Should I get it lower that expected to compensate for larger boobs later? Would larger boobs affect the tattoo?

Hello and thank you for your question.I think the other surgeons have given good advice about waiting to do the tattoo until AFTER your surgical procedure for a few reasons: 1. The implant will change the position of the tattoo and 2. There might be a scar directly through the tattoo - depending on what you get.I'd like to bring up a different aspect of implants and tattoos and that is the RISK of getting a tattoo after having implants. I have personally seen patients come to the hospital in SEPTIC SHOCK following tattooing after breast augmentation. Certainly people get tattoos after implants but we caution our patients to wait a MINIMUM of THREE MONTHS following a healed breast augmentation before considering a tattoo. We tell our patients - go to a clean, reputable tattoo salon and understand that there will ALWAYS be some degree of risk with tattoo and implants. Whatever you decide about your tattoo - I recommend seeking out a board certified member of ASPS / ASAPS for your consultation and surgery. Best wishesDr. B

It would be best to wait until after breast augmentation surgery to get your tattoo.  By waiting you will be able to see how the skin changes and get the best look from both the breast augmentation and the tattoo.  Best wishes for a great result on both.

With any aesthetic/ cosmetic surgery, our skin will stretch, shrink, be pulled, or excess removed. All of these can affect the appearance of tattoos. Since a tattoo is a significant investment, I would recommend that you undergo the surgery before the tattoo so that both things look great for years to come.

As the other surgeons have stated, it would be best to wait to get your tattoo after your breast augmentation, as the augmentation may change the topography of your chest/abdomen skin.  Ideally wait 3 months minimum so that your new breasts have settled.  Another consideration you should discuss with your surgeon is potentially getting antibiotic prophylaxis while you get your tattoos.  Hope this helps!

Allow the implants to settle if prior to getting a tattoo.  If the tattoo is 3 cm below the bra line then you should be okay.  I would check with your Plastic Surgeon also.

It would be best to wait. If you look at before and after photos of BA patients, you will recognize that some of the skin recruits (moves) up onto the breast over time. Best to separate these by months. Incidentally, the inks used may not be medically grade sterile, so it could affect your BA result in a negative way if your surgeon needs to cut through your tattoo. Developing a late capsular contracture because of that would be a bummer!

If you have your heart set on having breast augmentation soon, I would suggest that you postpone the tattooing.  Having breast augmentation surgery performed first will allow you to appropriately plan the positioning and design of the tattoo.  Best wishes.

Its best to wait for the tattoo.  The skin will adjust and there is simply no way to absolutely know exactly what will shift where.  We have a general idea and that's about it.  The tattoo is forever (essentially) so you want to have it where you want-wait.
