Follow-up Question: What is a retracted nostril?

My nostrils are uneven after my rhinoplasty, which was 6 years ago. In a previous question the doctor said something about a retracted nostril. What is that?

Hello and thanks for the question.  Alar retraction refers to the rim of the nostril being elevated upward compared to the opposite side.  There are degrees of severity and it is a possible complication following rhinoplasty.  There are treatment options which usually require additional surgery.  I recommend seeing an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon to discuss further.  Good luck.

Hello, thank you for the question and provided information.Alar retraction is a challenging issue in rhinoplasty marked by exaggerated nostril exposure and awkwardness. Nostrils can be improved for more symmetrical shape. Graft material either rib or ear cartilage can be  needed for this procedure. You need to seek exprienced, innovative Surgeon.Best Regards,

A retracted nostril can be caused by a  variety of issues, such as too much cartilage removed from the nasal tip.  A full set of pictures are required to make a determination about how best to proceed.  A columella-plasty is performed when there is a hanging columella.  A composite graft from the ear composed of skin and cartilage is required  to repair a true alar retraction when present.
