How long before I can do a push up? I have 375cc silicone gel under muscle.

Thank you for your question. I advice my patients to wait at least 3 weeks before running or exercise. It's best to be sure that everything is healed. There is always a chance of causing bleeding if you start much before that time. By this time you should be ready to do push ups with no trouble. When you start, listen to your body. You will be a little out of condition and a bit sore. But you will get back to where you were before surgery very quickly.

Hello,I advise my patients that they can begin resuming chest exercises at 6 weeks however I recommend starting at about 25% of previous intensity and slowly increasing over a period of roughly 3 months. It would be best to contact your Plastic Surgeon and ask them to advise you on this as they know your situation the best.Take care  

Thanks for the question. In my practice, after performing a BA I recommend to my patients to limit the movement of the arms for two weeks. After that, you can move your arms taking care and always with common sense. In this regard, it's not advisable to carry heavy weights to prevent the implant out of position, and allow the formation of the physiological capsule around the implant, also to avoid pain and breast swelling.Kind regards,Dr. Emmanuel Mallol.-

In my practice, I tell my breast augmentation patients that they are able to perform physical activities without any restrictions (eg. push up, weights, etc)  AFTER 8 weeks post surgery. Before that, the implant can shift, and asymmetry may occur. 

You should be able to exercise fully at this point (3 months postop) so just work your way back up to what you were able to do prior to surgery. Obviously, since you haven't worked out in awhile, you will need to build yourself back up to your prior routine. Good luck! 

I like for my patients to wait as long as possible up to a year.  Many patients can't wait that long for various reasons and do just fine.  As below, just ease into it.Always follow you surgeon's guidelines as he knows your actual procedure.Best Wishes,nana Mizuguchi, MD

It is always a good idea to consult your board certified plastic surgeon regarding your Postop recovery and activities. As far as push-ups after breast augmentation I usually suggest re-starting at 6 weeks Postop. Since you have not been doing these exercises for a few weeks it is understandable that the muscles will be weaker and you will likely need to slowly build up to your pre-op exercise capacity. I wish you the best of luck! R. I would normally wait about 6 weeks before attempting push-ups or bench press after a breast augmentation that is submuscular.  Of course, follow the advice of your surgeon.

Thank you for your question, and I wish you a speedy recovery! It is best
to discuss with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon his/her specific
recommendations as far as return to activity. But since you haven't done push-ups in awhile, and you have had surgery involving the pectoralis muscles, your muscles here will be weak in the beginning. The recovery after BA surgery
varies widely from patient to patient as well as their level of discomfort
during this time. Generally, the first 4-7 days are reserved for rest and
overall recovery, and after that patients can slowly work their way back with
gradual low risk activities. I prefer to wait at least 6-8 weeks for
repetitive upper body lifting/movements and arm use so that the muscles,
skin incisions and breast tissues have had adequate time to heal and
settle before being stressed. The recovery routine will best be determined
by your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon so be sure to touch base with him/her
on their specific recommendations.

It's unfortunate that your implants are under the muscle because push ups will always be an issue you will need to contend with.  In other words, every time you do chest exercises (such as push-ups), your breast implants will move like 2 puppies fighting under your shirt.  Over time, the internal pocket can stretch and your implants will drift laterally and downward.  If possible, avoid standard push-ups as much as possible and opt for decline push-ups (with your legs up on a chair so you are in a declining angle).  This will work the upper pecs and should have less tendency to cause your implants to drift.  As far as the timing goes, I would recommend 2-3 months.  You have to determine when your body has made enough of a scar tissue capsule around your implants to allow them to be stable when you perform a push-up.  Talk to your PS about your concerns and seek his or her guidance.
