Question

I had sclerotherapy 1 month ago for superficial spider veins. A very bad experience and extreme bruising. No follow up from Doc about my concerns. I wore compressing socks 48 hours post op and for 2 weeks everyday ,other then to sleep. I applied arnica cream as advised. Doc had his secretary tell me to start wearing the socks again for the brown stains. All of my spider veins are still present . But I'm more concerned about stains and darker veins. Willing to travel anywhere to have this fixed.

Post sclerotherapy brusing and discoloration is common.  Bruising usually subsides over about 2 weeks.  Staining is more difficult to treat and does take longer to resolve but also does usually resolve over about one year.  It is important to ensure that any clotted veins are evacuated and any open veins in the area are closed.  Topical treatment as mentioned by Dr.Karamanoukian will also help.

Thank you for your question.Hyperpigmentation is a known side effect of sclerotherapy and is likely to fade away in most patients.The pictures you provide are at 4 days post op and not the 1 month photos, so it is difficult to assess.I recommend that patients use 2 topical products and an oral supplement to reduce the hyperpigmentation - they are over the counter and available on the link below. They are VenoQuin and VenoLucent creams and also Melasmanex tablets. Avoid tanning for 3 months and use high SPF (>50) over the areas when you are out.I would recommend for you to continue to wear stockings over the areas sclerosed for another 2 months. This will likely help heal the hyperpigmented areas quicker. There are lasers that can help reduce the pigmentation, but they can also cause hyperpigmentation. I would not recommend them at this point. BestDr Karamanoukian
