Is it safe to take Xanax for anxiety 2 days prior to surgery?

I have a 6-hour plane ride from California to Miami. I have anxiety attacks, especially on airplanes so I want to take a xanax. I want to take the xanax on 2/22, surgery is not until 2/24. I am not on any other medications.

Provided you have been prescribed xanax by a physician who monitors you, you should be fine taking it two days prior to surgery.

Yes that is typically fine. Xanax is a short acting anxiolytic which means it is out of your system pretty quickly. Not uncommonly I have patients take a similar medication the night before and sometimes the morning prior to surgery if they are very anxious. I would not recommend taking it the day of surgery without discussing this with your surgeon. 2 days before shouldn't be a problem.

As with any medication, check with your surgeon. But in general, this is totally fine. Although the majority of my patients do not take stress relieving medication before surgery, some do. Good luck with everything.

Hello.Xanax(alprazolam) effects lasts up to 12 to 14 hours after initial dose. I think you shall be ok, if you get it 2 days before. Anxiety before surgery is not good, you should try to control it. Good luck.
