Hi and thanks for your question. Forehead masses can be due to a variety of causes, such as a cyst, localized fat (lipoma), or extra bone (osteoma). These masses can oftentimes be safely removed in an outpatient setting through either a incision placed on the forehead, or through a "scarless" approach by inserting a camera from behind the hairline to remove the mass from under the skin. Certain imaging such as ultrasound or a CT scan may be necessary to determine what the mass is before trying to remove it. Good luck!Keith Blechman, MD
Forehead osteomas and lipomas represent a common benign lesion found on the forehead. When visible, it can be distressing to the patient. While there are a variety of methods to remove these lesions, endoscopic approach with a single incision is the best. I utilize a small incision with specialized instruments specific for osteoma removal of the forehead, which allows me to perform this procedure comfortably in an in-office setting. Many patients can return to work in days rather than weeks with an incision conveniently hidden in the scalp.
Your best first step is an in-person consultation and exam with an ENT or plastic surgeon. Your provider can gain a lot of information from your evaluation, and decide on the next diagnostic and therapeutic steps. As Dr. Blechman wrote, imaging (eg, ultrasound, CT scan) can be very useful in your diagnosis. In terms of treatment, forehead masses are typically excised (if a cyst or lipoma) or shaved (if a bony mass, such as an osteoma) through incisions placed directly over the mass or hidden behind the hairline. Some forehead mass, small and in a favorable location, may be removed under local anesthesia. Good luck!
