Warm Compress after Chalazion surgery, by mistake?

I have applied a warm moist compress several hours after my chalazion removal surgery, instead of a cold compress. It may have contributed to swelling. Will the early warm compression increase internal lid scarring and lead to more tissue damage?

Thank you for your question. Applying warm / hot moist compresses is important treatment for helping chalazions resolve following removal. It increases blood flow and will not create scarring, nor tissue damage. A good rule of thumb for the degree of moist heat, is to microwave a potato and wrap it in a towel (to prevent burning the skin) and apply at the site for 60 minutes daily (minimally in 10-15 minute increments). This will help "shrink" the sty, and is an excellent preventative measure to do if you find another forming. It usually resolves this way. Sometimes a steroid is injected during the removal process to help reduce inflammation and continue to help "shrink" it. Best, Kristin J. Tarbet, DM, FACS

Warm packs increase blood flow. They may cause some initial increase in swelling, but are helpful, not harmful and should not cause scarring or any problems.

No, there will not be more scarring from the warm compresses.  Make sure you speak to your surgeon to voice your concerns.
