Hello, I'd like to slim out my masseter muscle. I know that Botox can help with this. I was wondering, however, if weight loss would also reduce the masseter muscle? I am on a "diet" and starting to lose weight, and I'd like to know if this muscle would slim out as well, or if Botox would be necessary. Thanks!
Answer: Masseter Muscle Weight loss will not likely have a significant impact on the size of the masseter muscle. Botox works nicely to relax this muscle to slim the jawline. Treatments are done every 3 to 4 months. See an expert injector to learn more.

Answer: Botox in the Masseter Muscle Very good question. While I commend your weight loss efforts, it will probably not have much effect on your masseter muscles. These muscles tend to enlarge over time due to clenching or grinding the teeth. If you treat them with Botox, it will not only reduce the size of the muscle; it can also reduce tension in your jaw if you are experiencing that. Botox injections are performed in the office and typically take just a few minutes. The procedure is relatively comfortable and there is no downtime afterward. You should see the results develop in the two weeks following your procedure and they should last three to four months after that. Keep in mind you will need to repeat the treatment to maintain the positive results. Choose a doctor who is board certified and very experienced in Botox to ensure the best possible results.

Answer: Slimming the Masseter muscle Weight loss will likely slim your overall facial appearance however it will not specifically slim the masseter muscle. Masseter muscle hypertrophy is caused by clenching or grinding of the teeth. Over time the muscle thickens as a result of this chronic muscle contraction. Botox can be very effective in lessening this muscle contraction which thins the muscle and creates a slimmer, more contoured jawline. I also recommend my patients consult a dentist for a nightguard since many patients clench their teeth at night. Please consult a board certified dermatologist experienced in the treatment of masseter muscle hypertrophy. Best wishes.

Answer: Only Botox can reduce the masseter muscle size in the cheek or wearing a night guard, not weight loss as there is no fat to lose Weight loss won't reduce muscle size. Only its inactivity will contribute to its reduction so wearing a nightguard to prevent grinding or clenching too much may help but Botox is the most effective short term method to reduce the thickness of the lower face if caused by masseter muscle hypertrophy (enlargement). The information provided in Dr. Shelton's answer is for educational purposes only and is not intended to constitute medical advice.
