Surgery in a different state?

Miami is probably just as expensive as California for many plastic surgical procedures. Far more important than price is finding the best plastic surgeon for the job. The most critical decision to be made in achieving the best plastic surgical result is picking the most experienced and talented, that is the best, plastic surgeon possible. Too often, patients choose a physician based on a catchy ad, the brand name of a technique, the basis of one or two before and after photos, or their web site’s search engine ranking. While I regularly treat patients from out of state, it is usually for a procedure that I have special expertise in such as revisions. It is hard to believe that of the thousand or so plastic surgeons in California, there isn't one who can do a mommy makeover to your standards and that you would pay a lot less in Miami (assuming your will be seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon.) Add to that the cost of travel and the uncertainty of follow up, it may be worth spending a little more time researching options closer to home.

Aesthetic plastic surgery is not a one-day event but a process including follow-up. In my own practice, I follow patients after a mommy makeover for about two years. Many of the visits can be virtual by way of online photographs. Nevertheless, make certain that you have all the details of your follow-up clear with your surgeon.

#Mommymakeover in californiaThere are so many excellent surgeons in LA and OC alone.  Miami fees are just as high when performed by board certified surgeons.It will likely be difficult to get the post operative care you need locally with surgery performed elsewhere.  I would make all of these arrangments in advance.

I would not recommend having that many procedures out of state.  There are too many complications/issues that can occur post operatively.  Also, you should delay flying for as long as possible with that many procedures.   Miami is just as expensive, if not more than Los Angeles.  I would recommend you go to the American Society of Plastic Surgery website to find a board certified plastic surgeon in your area who is close to you and that will be able to follow your after care .

Every surgeon will have a standard schedule for their follow-up appointments.  Keep in mind that these are predicated on a complication or incident-free recovery.  Obviously you want to communicate with your surgeon before your big day so all aftercare plans are set.  This includes establishing a follow-up plan for when you return to California.  Often times a surgeon will have a colleague they can refer you to.  Otherwise, follow-up with your primary care physician may be necessary.  For remote patients, video conferencing is another tool you can use to keep your surgeon abreast of your progress. 

I live in Lubbock, TX, but trained at NYU (one of the top training programs in the country). My point is, I am sure you can find an excellent surgeon closer to home.  My biggest concern is when you say a surgeon offers 3 follow up appointments the first year.  You should be able to follow up as many times as you need or want for at least a year.  Also, shopping for the lowest price is always a bad idea.  Jane

Most of my out of state patients will typically stay locally for at least a week or ten days, depending upon the procedure they are having done. It is difficult to arrange follow up visits sometimes if you are a five hour flight away from your surgeon. It's the same issue when patients choose to have plastic surgery out of the country, it's just harder to see your surgeon in the event you have a complication or a problem.Best wishes,Dr.Bruno

This is one of the challenges of being so far away from your surgeon. I encourage you to discuss these concerns with your surgeon. You may be able to have video calls for post op appointments but you will likely need to be prepared to return to your surgeon if a complication arises.
