If a molar is not replaced but the opposing molar had a root canal and crowned is there less likely a problem of eruption?

Cracked lower farthest back molar may be extracted soon. Upper molar had a root canal and crowned. A bridge is not too applicable and I'm trying to avoid an implant (some tendency to clench or grind at night). If the lower molar is extracted, wouldn't there be less likelihood of eruptions from the top molar as it is already "dead" (or shouldn't be growing -I'm also in my late 50's)?
