Cracked lower farthest back molar may be extracted soon. Upper molar had a root canal and crowned. A bridge is not too applicable and I'm trying to avoid an implant (some tendency to clench or grind at night). If the lower molar is extracted, wouldn't there be less likelihood of eruptions from the top molar as it is already "dead" (or shouldn't be growing -I'm also in my late 50's)?

Hi:Normally after surgery there is inflamation, therefore the gum line can not be judged correctly until full healing has taken place.Best,Dr. Madddahi
Hi:
You need to go back to your dentist for bite adjustment. The symptoms you are describing can be remedied by simple bite adjustment.
