I had crown lengthening today to correct an uneven gum line. But immediately after surgery my gum line still looks VERY crooked - the low gum teeth are now very high compared to the ones I wanted to "match" them to. The doctor says the gum line will come down after swelling subsides. Is this likely? I feel very disappointed right now.

You need to go back to your dentist for bite adjustment. The symptoms you are describing can be remedied by simple bite adjustment.
