It would be much easier to discuss which therapies would benefit your face specifically if you added some photos of your face, especially frontal and profile views. Certainly, we should be clear that Julia Stiles has, by most standards, a beautiful and uniquely aesthetic face. However, there are often patients that have a fuller lower face, and this is not always due to the presence of adipose tissue, especially since many such examples, line Julia Stiles, are also fit. The fullness of the lower face, on a frontal view, is heavily dependent upon the bony framework of the face, specifically the mandible, as well as the fullness and bulk of the masseter muscles, which are key muscles of mastication. The bony skeleton can be contoured only with significant surgery that is riddled with potential complications, including a prolonged recovery. However, typical jaw contouring surgeries often focus more on smoothing out prominent jaw angles in women (known as gonial angles) than reducing the lower facial width. Reducing the size of the masseter muscles however, can be as easy as a simple botox treatment. Botox acts to partially paralyze the muscle, resulting in a gradual atrophy of the muscle, leading to a decrease bulk of the tissues and therefore a narrower width of the lower face. This type of treatment is very popular in Asian cultures, where there is a strong demand for a narrower, gentler, contour of the feminine lower face. Because the masseter muscle is being partially paralyzed, there is often a temporary period of difficulty chewing, especially thick foods, like steak, but because all other major muscles of mastication, especially the temporalis muscle, are not affected, the body compensates rather rapidly. Some patients may fall into the trap of undergoing liposuction of the face. In my opinion, liposuction of the face is potentially problematic, because all of the fat of the face is vital to a smooth and youthful contour, especially in women. Removal of subcutaneous fat from any aspect of the face has the potential to lead to contour anomalies that are much more aesthetically problematic than the original fullness of the face. Please consult with a board certified facial plastic surgeon for further detailed recommendations and an in-person evaluation prior to seeking any cosmetic therapy to the face. Best of luck!
