Burning Pain in Nipple?

Thanks for your question. I'm sorry for your discomfort. This is something that is not rare but fortunately goes away with time. I have found that massage does help. Sometimes if it is hypersensitive you can apply topical anesthetic for some relief. Hang in there.

Thank you for your question. There are likely sutures in the area of pain, and some inflammation from the sutures can cause this sensation. This will go away in 1-3 weeks, and return to a more normal sensation. I hope this helps.

You are only 5 days post surgery. Unfortunately, you will have these types of aches and pains.   This is very normal and will dissipate in a few weeks.  All the best to you in your recovery.

it's not uncommon for the nipple to be extremely sensitive and sometimes painful after breast augmantation. it is due to the stretching of the sensory nerves. It usually takes 2-6 weeks for the nerves to heal and the pain to improve. Sometimes it can take a few months for the sensation to return completely to normal.

In general, most women who have a disturbance in nipple sensation, whether it be less (hypo-sensation), or in some cases too much (hyper-sensation), the sensation goes back to normal with 3-6 months. Occasionally, it can take 1 - 2 years to be normal. Extremely rare, the sensation never goes back to normal. This is extremely rare in augmentation alone, more common in lift or reduction but less with a smaller lift like a crescent lift. Signs that sensation is coming back are needle type sensation at the nipple, itchiness at the nipple, or 'zingers' to the nipple. The number of women that lose sensation is much lower than 10%, closer to 1% in a simple augmentation. In some cases the same occurs with contraction where some women have no contraction and some women have a constant contraction of the nipples. Unfortunately there is no surgical correction for this. Massaging the area can help sensation normalize faster if it is going to normalize, but will not help if the nerve does not recover. In women with hyper-sensitive nipples, this will go away with time in most cases. Usually 3 months or so. In the interim, I have them wear nipple covers or 'pasties' to protect them from rubbing. It is unlikely that down-sizing the implant will cause regaining sensation. Down-sizing the implant may cause saggy breasts, however, and may necessitate a breast lift. Physical therapy with de-sensitivity techniques can help with this issue. The Peri-areolar incision is associated with increased risk of nipple numbness due to the fact that the nerve is in close proximity.Best Wishes,Pablo Prichard, MD

Nipple sensation changes after a breast augmentation are common. These can be a numbness or a hypersensitivity. Thankfully, both of these conditions typically return to normal after 6-10 weeks. For hypersenstive nipples, we often recommend the use of nursing pads as they seem to provide a nice relief for patients. The cause is typically a stretching or irritation of the nerves which supply sensation to the nipple.

This type of pain called a dyesthesia is very annoying but will go away with time.  Conservative massage along the lateral breast at the point of maximal tenderness will help. Also moving or displacing the implant medially away from these lateral nerves will help.  On some occasions injection of a steroid or even botox can be beneficial.  You should see  your plastic surgeon for help through this problem.  

Painful nipples after breast augmentation are generally due to stretching of the nerves and may take several weeks to resolve. Anti-inflammatory medication can relieve the discomfort. Ice packs or cold compresses can be used for a few days. Thereafter gentle local heat may be helpful. Ask your surgeon what he/ she prefers for treating your condition.

The hypersensitivity you are describing is normal and usually resolves within a few weeks. The nerve can be on some stretch and you can expect to have a few zinging sensation but is will resolve.

This is nipple sensativity which is not uncommon after breast surgery particularly breast augmentation.  It will settle down of its own accord over the next few weeks to months.
