I'm 6 Weeks Post Op and Have Burning in Armpit?

Question

6 weeks post op TUBA entry and have burning pain in my right arm pit. Started out just the skin being tender/achy then turned into a sharp internal pain that radiates, especially when I lay down making it nearly impossible to get a good sleep. Is this normal? What can I do to relieve it?

Thank you for your question. There seems to be some form on inflammation occurring so I recommend you see your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and have the area evaluated. This could just be inflammation from eh procedure, but other possible causes have to be ruled out. I hope this helps.

Armpit discomfort may be related to stretching, but can also be the result of cellulitis or an infection. It is best to have it checked out by your doctor.

This burning sensation is usually due to a stretching of the sensory nerves to the breasts. Gentle massage and implant displacement toward the middle will help with this problem. It is generally self limited and will go away with time.

This is due to an injury to either the intercostalbrachial nerve or an adjacent sensory nerve. If you had some numbness in this area after surgery then it was a stretch injury at the time of surgery which is not uncommon and as the nerve regenerates it can create painful sensations - and it will pass. If not then it may be a compression injury with referred pain which occurs later due to the tissue being compressed between the weight of the implant and wire in the bra in the lower outer portion of the breast and the pain shoots up toward the armpit. You can switch to a softer bra that is not as tight and take motrin several times a day for a week and it should get better. Either way it should improve.

Burning pains, numbness or hypersensitivity are not unusual for 3-6 weeks post augmentation. Most resolve by this time. If this sensation is getting less frequent, less severe and lasting shorting periods of time, then it should continue to just get better and go away. If it is getting worse, then you should discuss this with your surgeon.

There are many odd sensations patients get after breast surgery, and this does not sound particularly unusual. Almost all resolve without explanation or treatment. Sometimes a long acting non-steroidal drug such as alleve will take the edge off and allow a night's sleep. Otherwise ask your surgeon about a local anesthetic cream or patch. All the best.
