I had laser liposuction on my inner thighs and knees 5 days ago and have burning pain. Should I be concerned?

Its particularly bad at night when I'm trying to sleep. My surgeon says it's not typical but should subside with time. I've read that the laser can cause permanent damage.

Thanks for the question, the extremities of the body such as the arms and legs tend to hurt the most after liposuction as the nerves under the skin get trapped in swelling and when nerves get trapped in swelling they tend to give burning or even electric shock like sensations, this will go away, hang in there!

Low grade muscular discomfort after Liposuction is common. A "burning pain" may indicate nerve injury, either from inflammatory fluid compressing superficial nerves in your legs or more worrisome thermal injury as a side effect of the laser. Should the severe burning pain persist and /or is accompanied by any neurological changes (like leg weakness, foot drop, pins and needles or numbness) then you should inform your surgeon immediately and consider seeking consultation with a Neurologist. Remember the acronym LASER=light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.

After Laser Liposuction, some burning sensation can occur as part of the procedure but it should settle over a period of time. If the burning sensation continues the patient should seek immediate medical attention.

Pain can be variable for patients who have had laser lipo. If necessary, this pain can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications and neurontin. If it persists, I recommend following up with your Doctor. It can take 3-6 months for final results with Laser Lipo.
