Every month in the two weeks before my period I suffer from very heavy tender breasts. They usually grow a size during this time and then reduce a size after my period. I'm 31 and size 32II (US size )/ 32GG(UK size). From the surgeons I've spoken to I'm under the impression that if I have a breast reduction the symptoms will decrease because there is less breast tissue to become tender and heavy. I'm hoping breast reduction surgery will reduce/ alleviate these symptoms?
Answer: Cyclic hormonal breast pain Dear Brj2019, It is hard to tell whether breast reduction will have an impact on your cyclic breasts pain. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: Will a breast reduction help reduce cyclic hormonal breast pain? Dear Brj2019, I am sorry to hear about your cyclic breast pain. Changes in your body and comfort levels due to hormones can be very frustrating. Unfortunately, neither I nor any surgeon could say with certainty whether a breast reduction would help with your symptoms. While it is theoretically possible that a breast reduction could help by reducing the amount of breast tissue that becomes swollen and tender, reduction surgery is not intended to treat this type of breast pain. Breast reduction can reliably reduce shoulder, neck or back pain that is caused by too-heavy breasts putting strain on your muscles or your posture, but it will not change your body’s natural response to hormone fluctuations. If you are interested in a breast reduction for other reasons — such as consistent pain in your neck, back or shoulders, or because you are unhappy with the appearance of your breasts — then you should schedule a consultation with a board-certified surgeon to find out more about the procedure. If you are experiencing symptoms like nipple discharge, hard tissue bumps or changes in breast texture along with your cyclic pain, you should talk to your doctor to rule out other health problems. You can also talk to a women’s health specialist about other interventions that could help to keep you more comfortable during your cycle. Best of luck!

Answer: Will a breast reduction help reduce cyclic hormonal breast pain? A BR will not reduce/alleviate cyclic hormonal breast pain. When estrogen levels increase and progesterone levels decrease, a woman's breasts may get slightly larger in size. If the opposite occurs(progesterone levels increase and estrogen levels decrease), the breasts become tender. There also appears to be a strong association between fibrocystic breasts and hormonal changes.

Answer: Breast Reduction Hello, and thank you for your question. (Keep in mind that an in-person consultation is necessary for the best advice.) Breasts fluctuate in size to hormone fluctuations and weight changes. This is because breasts consist of glandular tissue (which reacts to hormones) and fat (which reacts to weight changes). There are no guarantees that having breast surgery will have any effect on or prevent what you have described. If you decide to pursue surgery it’s very important that you find a surgeon whom you are comfortable with and trust and who evaluates you in-person and tailors an individualized treatment plan for you and your aesthetic goals. Best of luck! Matthew A. DelMauro, M.D.

Answer: Painful breasts We do not operate for pain. There is no guarantee that the pain you have now will not continue after a reduction. Most of the time when we operate for pain , the surgery is totally unsuccessful as you end up with more pain -- at least in the post op period and then one can never guarantee that your pain will go away.
