Should I have breast reconstruction at my age, after mastectomy? I'm 65 years old

and only yours.  There is nothing ridiculous about wanting to be 'whole' and balanced.  If your surgeon doesn't want to accommodate your wishes, find another surgeon that isn't so closed minded about reconstruction.  Realize there are many ways to reconstruct a breast and much depends on what you are desiring and what your anatomy is.

I have treated many women in your age group. It is a personal preference and also based upon your overall medical condition. I think the majority of women are happy that they did the reconstruction.

As for the age, you are still young. the decision for breast reconstruction is a very personal decision. provided you are health, you are a good candidate for skin sparing mastectomy and breast reconstruction with the method of your choice.Samir Shureih MD. FACSsshureih@msn.com

You are absolutely NOT ridiculous.  As long as you have no medical conditions that would disqualify you from a reconstruction, your age is not an issue.  The oldest patient I reconstructed was 74 years old at the time of surgery and she recovered well.  This patient walked 4 miles a day and was in impeccable shape.  It's a matter of what condition you are in, not simply your age.  Most of the women I reconstruct are in their 60s.Quintessa Miller MD FACSSan Antonio Plastic Surgeon

Yes ma'am you should be seen and examined and informed of your options. In the past several weeks I have performed reconstructions on patients between their 5th and 8 th decades. You absolutely should have a consult.

reconstruction—or what type of construction, or whether you should do it all at
once or in stages—is yours and yours alone. Some women decide not to proceed
with reconstruction for personal reasons, while others feel “incomplete”
without reconstruction. If you’re unsure, you can always opt to hold off for
right now. There’s no reason you can’t opt for reconstruction later on if you
change your mind. I recommend reading up on your options and looking at lots of
before and after photos so you’re as educated as possible before making a
decision.
