Botox masseter muscle side effect? Hollow temples (Photo)

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs.  If Botox was only injected into your masseter muscles it would be unlikely to reduce the size of your temporalis muscles along either side of your head.  Often this hollowing takes place with age and weight loss and I would discuss the possible use of dermal fillers to help improve the area’s contour.  Hope this helps.

Hi, thank you for your question.  While Botox in the masseter muscle does slim the lower face, it has no effect on your temple area.  The length of time the masseter muscle remains paralyzed varies from patient to patient, but you should have full resolution 3-6 months following the date of injection.

Botox in the masseter muscle Botox a very rewarding treatment for TMJ pain, teeth grinding, and to reduce the profile of the lower cheeks. If you feel there is too much of the profile reduction, remember that Botox will wear off in about 3 to 6 months. When one part of the face  changes shape it may give the illusion that something has occurred elsewhere on the face. But Botox to the lower face doesn't cause any actual change to the temples.Temple filler injection is very rewarding and in my experience most patients don't even realize how impactful it can be to their appearance until they have it done and then they love it!

Most likely, the temples hallows are now a bit more pronounced because the lower face is slimmer. Injections in the masseters will not affect temples. I inject the temples with fillers using cannulas. Deep periosteum injectors are as effective. Temporal hallowing won’t return to normal without intervention. 

Hi. Thank you for the question and pics. Botox should not have any impact on the hollowing of temples, but further, looking at your photos I really don’t see any “hollowness” to your temples anyway. If I was your treating doctor I would tell you that the contour of your temples are great and you should leave them alone! Hope this helped,

Thank you for your question and picture. Botox is great at treating bulging masseter muscles and to slim down the lower face. It does not affect the temple area. Hollow temples can easily be corrected with dermal fillers. I hope this help. All the best, Dr. Michon

Using botox to treat the masseter muscles would have NO effect on the appearance of the temples.   Temporal hollowing is usually a result of weight loss and can be treated with soft tissue fillers.  

Botox in your masseter shouldn't affect your temples at all. Temples are one of the first places we lose the fat pads, so hollowing of the temples is a normal part of aging. I recommend getting Sculptra to your temples to increase collagen formation. Good luck! 

Hi BabyN,The Botox injection to you masseters won't have any effect on your temples. You probably lost weight which is why you lost volume in that area. Sculptra is a good filler to use in that area because it induces collagen formation over time.All the best, Justin Harper, M.D.
