Botox and Conception, is it Okay?

Question

Hello, yesterday, I had Botox for the 1st time for hyperhidrosis - ahead of my wedding in about 6 weeks time. I stupidly didn't take into account that my soon-to-be husband and I want to start trying for a baby ASAP after the wedding. Now I am worried we should hold off trying to conceive because of my botox treatment. But i am nearly 35 and i feel we should get on with it. Can anyone advise please? Lucy

Because you are not currently pregnant, and the effects of cosmetic Botox are limited, I wouldn't worry. There isn't any research determining whether or not you'd have potential problems having had treatment and trying to conceive. Very rapidly after treatment, all of the botulinum toxin is either bound or broken down. So there should be no issue if you become pregnant a couple of months after a treatment. However, the advice to consult with your gynecologist is reasonable and appropriate.

Thank you for your question. There are no studies that show Botox impacts your ability to get pregnant or pregnancy. Out of caution, most doctors will not inject if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. However, I recommend you to follow up with ob/gyn to discuss your concerns and treatment. Best of Luck!

anytime you and your husband wish...just probably shouldn't be pregnant at the time of your botox injection...but if you're getting married in 6 weeks and your botox you're contemplating botox now...go for it...that's not an issue...or as they say, no sweat...

While I would discourage Botox usage during pregnancy or nursing (merely for theoretical reasons), I would not worry in your case that the Botox inside your body/armpits would in any way realistically affect your baby. That said, you could check with your obstetrician although I doubt they'd have any knowledge of this. The botox toxin binds with the nerve receptors and the rest is cleared from your system within days. Botox is not approved for pregnant or lactating women, however since you are not currently pregnant I would not worry about becoming pregnant in the near future. There is no literature to suggest that you receiving botox prior to becoming pregnant poses any risk for you or your potential baby. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and good luck!

Botox/Dysport are considered a Class C medications meaning that animal (not human) studies show adverse fetal effects but no controlled human studies were done OR no animal or human studies have been done. That being said, botox and dysport are done in such huge volumes nationwide in women of childbearing age and it is likely a good number of them may be pregnant and not yet know it. I basically tell my patients that if they know they are pregnant to come back and see me after they deliver.

Medicolegal wisdom dictates that you discuss this with your OBSTETRICIAN - having said that, I am sure hundred of thousands of women have gotten pregnant (unplanned) after they had Botox inections - somebody would have written a scientific manuscript about this if it were a significant problem. BOTTOM LINE - discuss this with your obstetrician if you are planning to get pregnant.

	Although Botulinum toxin (BTA) manufacturers do not recommend it to be used in pregnant and lactating women, there never was any actual evidence that it would be harmful in the doses it is used for cosmetic purpose.

	BTA will not affect your ability to get pregnant or be harmful . Its actual half life in patients blood rapidly goes down as soon it blocks nerve-muscle junction. For hyperhydrosis you would have had equivalent of 100IU of Botox and it would start working on sweat glands after 3-14 days. You should be safe to try for a baby after your wedding.

Dear Lucy no worry, The botox binds to the receptor sites in one hour. Once it binds it cannot move somewhere else. So after a day or so you are completely save... Have a great wedding & Save some cake for me!
