Can microneedling cause permanent redness?

Question

I’ve done 3 dermapen sessions, the first two were with 1.5mm and came out great. The third one I did I used 1.5mm then tapped each area for a few seconds with 2mm. There was blood but it was the same as the first two treatments. The problem is that it’s been almost 3 weeks and there is still slight redness from where it was treated?? It’s not super dark but still noticeable and annoying? Will this ever go away? What can help? Thanks!

Thank you for your question. Treatments must be spaced at least 4 weeks apart for appropriate skin cell turnover, and typically the redness will last 3-5 days. Cell turnover is the skin's natural exfoliation process. The skin naturally sheds dead skin cells through a process called desquamation. Every 28-40 days, on average, a new skin cell is "born" in the stratum germinativum, the deepest layer of the epidermis.I hope this helps. Be well.Larry Nichter , MD, MS, FACS

You may want to visit  wt  your doctor if the redness continues.  Usually it is present for a couple of days but everyone responds different.  If it is a big concern is best to talk to someone in his  office and put your mind at ease.

1.5-2.0 mm is an excessive depth for treatment. Micro-needling is safe when performed by a skin professional. It is hard to say what is causing the redness with the information provided. It could be that capillaries were broken, or it could be that the injured skin has not yet healed. I would suggest that you have your issue evaluated promptly by a professional.

Thanks for your question, but it sounds like you are treating yourself.  Whenever there is a problem with a treatment outcome, you should always contact the service provider first.  Almost everyone is better off if they leave treating their face to a professional.  Try calling customer services for the device you purchased for advice.  Best of luck.

The redness occurs because your skin gets inflamed or irritated from the needles in the micro needling. It is this inflammation that causes the Improvement in your skin as you start to produce elevated levels collagen.  The redness should not last more than a few days typically and there are certain creams that your doctor can recommend for you to help healing.  Regards,  Dr. Onir
