I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease a few months ago. I am taking methimazole 10mg a day. I want to get juvederm lip filler but I want to make sure it’s ok to do this if I have Graves’ disease. On juvederm website it says it is to be used in caution in people taking immunosuppressive meds and methimazole is slightly immunosuppressive. Does this mean I shouldn’t have juvederm? If it’s ok for me to have it, why does the allergan website caution against it in people taking immuno suppressive meds?
Answer: Lip Fillers & Graves Disease Thank you for your question. Yes, you can have Juvederm injections with Grave’s disease. Because of your metabolism being higher the filler may not last as long and may need touch ups sooner. I recommend addressing your concerns with an expert injector. Best of Luck!

Answer: Lip fillers and Graves disease Graves disease is a condition of the Thyroid affecting hormone production which control metabolism. Your metabolism may slow down as your hormones get adjusted during treatment. This may effect your metabolism of HA fillers and how fast your body absorbs the material. For people without thyroid issues HA fillers in the lips last anywhere from 6 months to 1 year depending on what you get injected. I recommend a longer in-depth discussion with your endocrinologist and your injector prior to making any final decision. Best from Boston, Dr. Onir
