Should my surgeon have removed cartilage during my otoplasty?

There are many ear cartilage shape modifying techniques including minimally invasive techniques such as incisionless otoplasty with sutures, traditional otoplasty with removal of skin behind ear and placement of sutures. I find that in many of the cases I have to take additional steps to properly place and position an ear that will look aesthetically pleasing. This often includes shaving small discs of cartilage from the back to relax “strong and constricted cartilage”, sometimes this is not enough and small wedge of tissue also has to be removed to further deepen ear cartilage and bring it closer to the head.  Of course traditional suture methods are also utilized. I think your surgeon may have been referring to the conchal bowl which is the hollow deep in the ear. This is the only site where cartilage may be removed, and then only in rare cases. Usually the ear cartilage  is simply weakened along the edge of the fold, and folded back to your head, and kept there by sutures. It is highly likely to remain where it has been placed unless you undo the repair eg by injury/trauma/contact sports etcIf you have any concerns please see your PS for advice and reassurance.
