Should blood work ALWAYS be done before a plastic surgery, specifically Rhinoplasty?

Preop blood work is essential before any surgery that involves general anesthesia. If you're young and healthy-- in our practice -basic blood work and in some instances-chest x-ray-- is a requirement. If you're over 40 and/or have any medical conditions-- we request medical clearance from a primary doctor. But you should always talk to your Doctor about your concerns.

  Usually a hemoglobin and pregnancy test are performed.  Sometimes more labs are done.  I am not sure that you could get a panel of experts to agree on this.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA

In my practice, we have no requirement for routine blood work in young healthy patients. On the day of surgery we do a hematocrit. Each practice has it's own opinions on this subject

In many cases, some blood work is done to assure you are healthy for surgery.  This is usually done at the hospital / outpatient at your pre op appointment.  In general, the medical history is taken by the hospital nurse, and testing is done per anesthesia protocol.  If you have any questions, direct those to your surgeon prior to surgery.
