I had a mole recently removed from my face, how long will it take to fill in?

I have recently had a mole removed from the face, I kept it moist for two weeks then allowed a light scab to form which has now fallen off. The skin underneath the scab is pink, uneven, and looks abit sunken. How long will the skin take to fill in and turn into normal skin? Will the shiny appearance fade after a while. I am nearly three weeks post surgery.

Thanks for your question.  Every patient's skin is a little different and the healing also varies according to the size and depth of the shave.  It is normal for the skin to be pink and shiny after three weeks.  The depressed area may take several months to fill in, and the shiny surface should fade and lighten gradually during that time.  If you have any concerns, please follow-up with your physician.

It is normal for your scar to appear pink and shiny at this stage. This is your body's normal inflammatory response as it heals. We generally tell patients that scars take about a year to fully mature. Hopefully, by that time the scar will flatten out and fade. In the meantime, there are a number of topical treatments that can help your scar heal in the best manner possible - it is advisable to discuss these options with a plastic surgeon familiar with wound healing and skin care.
 If you are still unhappy with the appearance of the scar after a year of maturation, a scar revision procedure (in which the scar is removed and sutured closed again) could be considered.
