My left breast is a small A and my right is a big B and you can tell by looking at them that they aren't the same. I've never had anything done to my breast, they just grew like this. I either want to just get one implant in my left breast to make it the same size as the right if that's possible, or get both breast done to a C. My insurance will cover birth defects, so is this considered a birth defect?
Answer: Very unlikely your insurance will cover breast asymmetry I'm sorry that your different breast sizes are giving you concern. There are very few circumstances where insurance companies will cover the cost of treatment of breast asymmetry. There is a condition called Poland's syndrome where one breast barely develops if at all and the other breast has full development. This may be associated with other irregularities including underdevelopment of the underlying pectoralis muscle. In this case I have had one insurance company cover the cost of surgery. Most say no.It would be nice if you could call your insurance company and find out but in my experience their answer will be "if it is medically necessary it will be covered". What they fail to explain is that it is the insurance policies that determine whether it is considered medically necessary, not you and your physician. My best advice is to have a consultation with a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery for an evaluation and to receive an opinion. They are more likely to know you your plan will respond. Since BCBS of Alabama if the dominant insurance company in all of Alabama, your surgeon will likely be familiar with their policies.Even if your insurance company does not cover the cost, you may consider saving up to pay for the procedure yourself. It can do a lot for self esteem. Good luck.

Answer: Insurance Uneven breasts are very common and not considered a birth defect. No insurance company will cover the cost of augmentations, unless it is for reconstruction after breast cancer. However, I would suggest meeting with a board certified plastic surgeon and discussing your options.

Answer: Will Blue Cross of Blue Shield cover asymmetrical breasts? Greetings. In general, asymmetrical breasts are considered as cosmetic issue and would not be covered by insurance. You can always seek a consultation from a plastic surgeon to obtain more information. Good luck!

Answer: Will insurance covers uneven breasts In Alabama, Blue Cross and Blue Shield has a monopoly with greater than 73% of the market. Hence they pretty do whatever they like and believe it or not , they also have lobbied the state legislature to declare them "not" an Insurance company so they are not subject to the usual rules and regulations pertaining to how an insurance company has to operate. Amazing but true. Insurance rates in Alabama continue to skyrocket (along with the salaries of the Blue Cross executives) and yet reimbursements rates and coverages continue to decrease. Breast asymmetry and size is one of hose areas where Alabama BC/BS had made significant cuts over the past few years. At present , while breast asymmetry has varying degrees of severity , only the complete failure of one side to develop would be covered and instead of covering it to allow a patient to obtain symmetry which usually requires a procesure on both sides, BC/BS will only cover the one side. The only way for you to tell if you fit into this narrow category would be to have an exam and submit the request to the BC/BS review process and see what happens. Good luck.
