I’m planning to have my chin implant removed — it was placed about two years ago. I don’t like the way it’s made my face look longer and more elongated, and my smile has also changed. I’m wondering how soon after removing the implant it’s safe to inject a hyaluronic acid filler in that area?

Once you remove your chin implant, the pocket will take time to settle. That said, it is important to inject the HA filler in the soft tissue and avoid filling into the pocket. I would wait at least 6 weeks. Our office specializes in the removal of chin implants and we would generally wait 2 months.

Unfortunately, your chin implant was not the correct solution for your face. The implant obliterated your mentolabial fold. Without seeing your original photos, I would imagine that your original chin is quite recessive. You might want to consider removal of the implant with a simultaneous sliding genioplasty. The procedure takes your natural chin and positions it in a more attractive position while maintaining a normal mentolabial fold. The surgery is performed in the office with sedation anesthesia and takes about an hour. The incision is inside the mouth and does not affect your bite. Placing fillers will be a yearly repeat procedure and can get quite costly. The chin area can take 4-5 syringes of filler each time.
