Can weight loss after rib cartilage rhinoplasty lead to resorption?

I just had rib cartilage rhinoplasty about 3 weeks ago. I've seen horror stories about cartilage resorption online. I wonder what factors are associated with abnormal absorption weight? Will weight loss, dieting etc affect anything?

The short answer is: there is nothing you can do to prevent cartilage resorption other than preventing an infection. You need to adhere to your surgeon's instructions, be a compliant patient, and that's all. Diet, exercise, weight loss, etc do not affect the chance of resorption. Did you have irradiated cadaveric rib or your own rib? In theory, the risk of resorption is slightly greater with cadaveric rib although a large study in the past has shown that there is no difference. I think there are many other factors such as surgical technique etc. that affects these risk.Best wishes,Thomas Walker, MD, FACS

Hello,Rib cartilage resorption is minimal when the graft is either tightly affixed to native cartilage using sutures, or wrapped in fascia as an onlay graft.
