How can I treat extreme mondors cords from abdominal and flank liposuction 2 years post op?

Question

I had an unfavorable outcome of liposuction and developed an uncountable amount of mondors cords all over my flanks. It's painful to stretch. My surgeon said to do keep massage to try to break them but i have been and they seem to be getting stronger if anything. Sometimes they itch so bad. Any help, I would be so grateful. What kind of doctor do i go to? Steriods? Surgery? I'm so devastated. Please help

I would try RF treatments with steroid injections and if not better then see a vascular physician to ablative or remove the veins (if this truly is vascular and not scar tissue).  Best, Dr. Emer.

Thank you for your photos. Mondor's cords can form under the skin of the breasts and abdomen particularly after the surgery. During the early phases, ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti inflammatories can help reverse the cords. For patients such as yourself who have had cords for such a long period,  I prefer direct steroid injections into each cord as the oral medications will not work. These can be repeated several times until they go away. You do not need surgery at this time. Hope this helps!

The medical term for Mont doors chords is superficial thrombophlebitis. These are blood clots that for me in the veins close to the skin surface.  Typically days improve over a few months to a year or two.   For those very rare cases that persist for long periods of time the best treatment option is injection of anti-inflammatory steroids directly into the area of tightness.  I suggest starting with a single cord in treating a small part of it.  This condition is more related to certain individuals being prone to them rather than how the liposuction is performed.  Releasing the tension with very small surgical interruptions may be an option as well but I would definitely try steroid injections first.  Oral steroids will most likely do nothing.  Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
