Is IPL or laser treatments safe when you have cheek implants?

Question

I have cheek implants And I am interested in getting IPL or a laser treatment for acne marks I have on my cheeks. I do not have any acne scarring but I do have a reddish discoloration some acne left behind. What is the safest way to get rid of the acne discoloration when you have cheek implants? Thanks!

Hi Rupert.  It's safe to have most laser treatments after having cheek implants.  IPL would not be a problem.  The problem would be that IPL is not ideal for red acne scars.  Pulsed dye lasers would be.For examples of acne scar before and after photos for red acne scars, click on the link below.

This is an excellent question. Laser treatments such as a laser peel or profractional do not penetrate very deep into the skin, and are safe over all types of cheek implants. IPL treatments, on the other hand, penetrate more deeply. I do not perform IPL treatments over metallic implants such as titanium, because the implant can reflect the energy of the IPL and heat up the skin beyond what is safe. I suspect this would not be an issue with a silicone implant of the type normally used for cheek augmentation, but I would check with the laser manufacturer to make sure.Hope that helps. My suggestion is to see a well trained cosmetic dermatologist.  IPL does very little compared to yellow laser or pulsed dye laser.  also for an anti-aging effect, fraxel, clear+brilliant/microneedling do very well.  Best, Dr. Emer.
