Can I use a heating pad?

Question

Just got home from surgery around 5pm and wondering is it ok to use a heating pad? How about rubbing them a little? I'm in so much pain and I want to know what I can and can't do to ease it a little

Because the sensation to your breasts has been altered, I tell patients to avoid heating pads.  You may not realize the pad is too hot and burn your skin.  Please contact your surgeon who can best advise you in your particular situation.

I do not allow my patients to use ice or a heating pad after surgery.  I also have them refrain from any massage for 1 week. We use narcotics for pain control.

Each surgeon has his or her guidelines for postoperative care. Most surgeons would not recommend the use of a heating pad. If you do not want to use the prescribed pain medication, ice packs if used properly can be helpful. Consult with your surgeon as he or she knows the scope of the surgery and the specifics about you.
