Bellafill for upper lip lines or skin resurfacing? (Photo)

Question

I’m wanting to do something that’s going to last a good while. Not just a filler I’m going to have to keep coming back every 3-12 months or so. I’ve heard great things about Bellafill and I’m interested in a product that’s going to last years instead of months. Please see picture

If you try to fill in all of the lines of the upper lip with temporary filler, then you will look as if your white or cutaneous upper lip looks puffy aka "Homer Simpson". If you elect to do filler, I would use juvederm or restylane brands of filler since they are easier to put into the lines themselves. In addition, I would not recommend belafill in that area due to the risk of lumpiness and it is difficult to get into smaller lines. If you wanted to improve the texture of your upper lip and also improve or remove most of the wrinkles, I would recommend a laser resurfacing as that treatment is the best for improving wrinkles around the lip and also improve the cobblestoning or texture of your upper lip.

BellaFill is a great filler for structural support, acne scars and facial contouring but, at the same time, Bellafill is not really for fine lines. I would not recommend Bellafill for upper lip lines.  Those lines are very superficial and Bellafill is used primarily in a deeper layer.  Laser skin resurfacing can help improve upper lip lines in some people.  Between the two procedures, I would say that laser resurfacing would be better than Bellafill to improve upper lip lines.

Fillers such as Restylane Silk, Belotero, or Juvederm can work well to treat lines around the mouth, but the best first option is laser resurfacing or deep peels to induce collagen production. Superficial radiofrequency devices and microneedling can help as well and are less invasive. I suggest going to an experienced cosmetic dermatologist with expertise in lasers and fillers. I find Bellafill is ideal for the lines above the upper lip.  Typically I use a cannula to inject it in this area.  I find it stimulates collagen and smooths out the entire area.  It cannot be used inside the lip just around the lips.

Thanks for your question.  I think you will get much more natural looking, long lasting results from either a series of fairly aggressive microneedling procedures in the upper lip area, just a few units of Botox in the upper lip to reduce the strength of the lip-pursing muscles, and CO2 resurfacing as a most long lasting result.  Bellafill is risky in any area and can cause you to develop nodules 7-10 years after injection, which need to be surgically removed.   We have seen a patient recently who developed nodules along the cheekbones and jawline from Bellafill placed 10 years ago, so I would proceed with great caution.  The hyaluraonic acid fillers such as Restylane Silk or Volbella are very nice and superficial fillers for that area and can be reversed if a mistake is made or you don't like the look.  Bellafill is irreversible, so don't do something you might regret.  Best of luck and see a board certified dermatologist with experience in lip area correction for your options in person.

I use Bellafill in lip lines on a regular basis, and it works extremely well. I have yet to see any problems with lumps in this area, so in my experience it is a great option. I use a cannula to treat the whole area rather than injecting each line separately. It takes 3-4 months to see the peak effect in lip lines, but it is one of my favorite treatments here. For deep lip lines it can take 2 treatment sessions. Bellafill can NOT be used in the border of the lips or the body of the lips, so I like to add some Restylane or Restylane Silk to improve the appearance of the lip edges and lip fullness, but Bellafill is a great adjunct to that.
