Accumulation of liquid and bleeding in the mouth after chin implant

Question

It's been a week sinse I had a chin implant (intra-orally). My swelling has gone down a lot, with the exception of a glf sized firm bumb on either side of my chin. I suspect those have accumulated some form of liquid. How normal is that, and how will it go away? Should I take anti inflammatory meds? One other thing is that 3 to 4 times during the day or as I am laying down in the evening, I get blood in my mouth. It is not a lot, but is that normal? You are offering us great comfort. THANK YOU

You should speak with your operating doc as if there are small collections of fluid or blood they may need to be aspirated.  By 1 week its not uncommon to have swelling, however, you should not have any fluid coming out of your incision intraorally.  I would certainly give the office of your doc a call and discuss things with them as they know exactly what was done in the operating room and what implant, etc was used.  Best of luck.

You really should follow-up with your surgeon with your concerns. It is normal to have swelling at one week. When the implant is placed through an intraoral incision it is possible to have some drainage in your mouth at the incision site if pressure is placed on your chin. I would not recommend anti-inflammatory medication, but I would highly recommend antibiotics for at least one week. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your surgeon.

Hi, I have performed many chin implant surgeries over the past 30 years.  I am sorry to hear that you had an issue with your Chin Implant Surgery.  As a fresh post op patient you really should be seen, treated and follow the advice of your Chin Implant Surgeon.  If for some reason that is no longer an option, ask your GP or find another facial plastic or general plastic surgeon in your area to get a second opinion.  In any case, please continue to seek treatment if you have concerns following your surgery.  This is why I prefer placing the chin implant through a small incision under the chin.
