How can I stop my bum from being numb? I'm 3 days post BA.

Question

I am day 3 post op after having a breast augmentation and everything is healing fine but I have noticed a ptc of my bum above my left buttock is numb. Day 1 and 2 I was pretty much bed bound and I've been sleeping elevated on my back. My bum kept going numb so I had to wriggle about a bit but now even though I've been up most of the day moving about its still numb??? Can anyone give some advice please? Thank you!

Hello,Thank you for your question. It sounds like you may have compressed a nerve while spending a lot of time on your back. You should be up walking around regularly post op- not bedridden, as this will improve circulation, help reduce the risk of blood clots and help reduce constipation among other benefits. Talk to your Plastic Surgeon if you have severe pain or feel otherwise immobile.All the best

Thank you for your question. As you are 3-days post-augmentation at this point, you are probably ready to begin some mild physical activity, like walking around the house. It’s important to promote blood circulation during your recovery, and getting up to walk around more frequently will alleviate some of the pressure on your buttocks from sitting. You can also use a donut or wedge pillow to take some of the weight off your buttocks while you sit.

It sounds as though the pressure on your buttocks from lying in bed is compressing normal sensory nursing creating numbness.  It is very important that you  attempt to be up and walking as much as possible and when you do sit or lay down that you do so on the sides of your hip and not flat.  Of course express your concerns to your plastic surgeon.
