I am now 6 weeks post op, I had lipo in my upper arms and an arm lift with the incisions being in my underarm. I am still feeling uncomfortable numbness in both arms, one more than the other. I am still wearing my compression garment because whenever i take it off the numbness gets worse and I feel like my arms are huge. Is it okay to keep wearing the compression garment for more than 6 weeks? And what can I do to reduce the numbness?
Answer: Post Op Arm Lift Care Thank you for your question! These are are all common post-op arm lift feelings and questions. You are now at a time where you can start massaging the area of liposuction and your incisions. Create small firm circular motions with your fingertips to the area and spend about 10 minutes with each arm three times daily. You can also try stretching against a wall, there you use your fingers to climb up the wall until you are flush against it. It is common for patients in my practice to wear their garments for 6- 8 weeks. After that time they begin to wean themselves out of the garment; wearing it less and less each day, alternating days on and off the garment so they start to feel just as comfortable OUT of the garment as they do IN it. Good luck.

Answer: Reducing Numbness in the Arms After Arm Lift and Liposuction Thank you for your question regarding numbness after your minimal arm lift and liposuction. Based on your description, it is not uncommon to experience numbness or tingling in the arms at 6 weeks post-op. Numbness occurs because the nerves in the area are still healing from the trauma of surgery, and it can take several months for sensation to return fully. Continuing to wear your compression garment beyond six weeks is generally safe, especially if you find that it helps reduce discomfort and swelling. However, you should consult your surgeon to confirm they recommend ongoing use at this stage of your recovery. Compression can provide support and minimize fluid accumulation, which may help ease the sensation of numbness and the feeling of heaviness in your arms. To help reduce numbness, you can try the following: Gentle Massage: Lightly massaging the affected areas with a fragrance-free moisturizer or scar gel can help stimulate circulation and nerve recovery. Avoid applying too much pressure to avoid irritation. Physical Therapy: Ask your surgeon if physical therapy or specific exercises to promote nerve healing and mobility are appropriate for you at this stage. Vitamin B Complex: Supplements like vitamin B12 may support nerve regeneration, but always check with your doctor before adding supplements to your regimen. Patience and Time: Nerve recovery can be slow, taking weeks to months depending on the extent of the procedure and your body’s healing process. If you notice worsening symptoms, such as increasing pain, persistent swelling, or changes in skin color, it’s important to contact your surgeon promptly to rule out complications like nerve entrapment or fluid retention. It sounds like you’re progressing well, and these sensations should continue to improve with time. Keep communicating with your surgeon for personalized guidance. Best wishes for your continued recovery! Sincerely, Dr. Katzen
