Sneezing after abdominoplasty. Will it ruin my results?

Hi, I'm 5 weeks post op and I've managed to catch a small cold. Whenever I sneeze I freak out and feel like I'm going to ruin my op. I guess because I've invested so much $$ and emotion into this op, I'm scared of ruining it all. I've been trying to put off the sneezes (by doing that thing where you press against your top lip), but sometimes they still happen and it hurts and stresses me out. Having said that, it doesn't hurt as much as the first few weeks. Am I going to ruin all that work?!

Patients often cough and sneeze after abdominal surgery. This can be painful but will not affect the long-term results. If you anticipate sneezing or coughing place counter pressure on the abdominal wall to decrease the discomfort.

Most abdominoplasties also have their muscle tightened. The biggest risk post op with sneezing is to pop one of these stitches. What I recommend -- is when you feel the sneeze coming on-- squeeze a pillow tightly on your abdomen before you sneeze.

I would not worry about sneezing.  This is a normal activity of life and will not affect your tummy tuck.  Nonetheless, if you do have to sneeze, bring a hanky with you and perhaps try to sneeze with your mouth open (i.e. obviously away from others).  Closing your mouth during a sneeze can increase the back pressure internally on your abdomen.  Either way, I'm sure you will be fine.

Sneezing after abdominoplasty, although rare, could cause enough pressure to break or tear some of the internal stiches, which are used to tighten your abdominal muscles. To be on the safe side open your mouth when you sneeze so as to lessen the strain on your stitches.  Or you can sneeze into your arm so you will not spray everyone around you.  If you have concern call your Surgeon and make an appointment to be checked.
